One gallery, three exhibits, five outstanding panelists adds up to a Blockbuster Night at The Cleveland Institute of Art. Be one of the first to see national and international exhibits and hear from an international panel on the forces that drive modern design.

Shoes! (5/08)

If you are a fan of shoes like I am (total addict) then Shoes, Shoes, Shoes: Footwear Fashions Past & Present hosted by Cleveland Public Library, Social Sciences Department will be a reason enough to call in sick this Friday!

The documentary of Head Over Heels will be presented as well as an exhibit on the history of shoes. Come in and see what fashion and costume resources are available at the library. The exhibit will be on display throughout May.

Deck Art Opening (5/02)

Where can you find the most “rad,” “sick,” and “tight,” decks this weekend? Nope, not at your local half pipe skate park but rather at the opening of the “Deck Wreckers” exhibit opening at the Pop Shop. The exhibit includes a mix of over 25 uniquely designed skateboards from edgy area artists. No grip tape or posers allowed. :) Sweet!

a "sparkling" exhibit

I know I may have mentioned this happening prior....but I wanted to make a note of the most exquisite exhibit I have ever seen and urge everyone to MAKE TIME over this final week to visit the “Artistic Luxury” exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art... it is stunning.

This past Friday evening I had the privilege of exploring the works of Peter Carl Fabergé (Russian), Louis Comfort Tiffany (American), and René Lalique (French) with my three friends (Clevelanders). It was an evening of “oohhss” and “aaahhhs”. There were lots of “We should have been born in another era” dreamy comments. We were drawn to the sparkles of diamond headbands and orchid broaches wondering who exactly had the honor of accessorizing their “going out” clothes with such bling. Our imaginations ran wild with thoughts of royalty all adorned and poised just so.



Artistic Luxury offers a glimpse—through the stunning creations of three great artists—into the world of the rich and famous during the years leading up to the First World War. Each designer was known for his own characteristic style and achievement, and the exhibition devotes a separate gallery to each jeweler, recreating the ambiance of the Paris world’s fair.

The 6-7 room exhibit was filled to the brim with works that will only grace the walls of the museum for one more week. Don’t miss it! The museum is open late this Wednesday until 9pm and Friday until midnight. Cost : CMA members FREE, $17 adults, $12 college students & seniors. $8 children ages 6–18. Artists create work in response to 8 years of the Bush administration. Counting Days features art as political dissent, largely absent from our current times of historical turmoil. 17 artists counter the apathy and engage in “anti-American activity” to show their true colors as real American Patriots – loyal to the notion of freedom and human rights - concepts our founding fathers died for. Exercising the freedom of speech is patriotic.

MOCA Fall Kick Off (9/12)

Come experience the sculpture work of artist Jorge Pardo. His work is bright, bold and playful, it is simply a joy to experience.

Along with the gallery exhibit opening, Jorge Pardo and Bonnie Clearwater will reflect upon Pardos' work. This talk will begin at 6pm. As the night temps drop, and the lecture comes to a close, DJ Neil Chastain will be mixing up the dance beat with a touch of live Conga drums. Super hot! So put your dancing shoes on and plan to drop a move or two. The evening will be topped off with stilt walkers and other fun surprises. Plus…MOCA Family Art Studio returns after a successful summer debut. The festivities will wrap at around 10pm

Labor & Industry (9/12)

The Second Annual Labor and Industry Show Opens at the Asterisk Gallery this Friday. The show is supported by Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. Labor & Industry returns for Tremont's Art Walk and will showcase works of local artists based on the themes of Labor & Industry through a variety of mediums, photography, painting, sculpture and film.

For 2008, Ohio Canal Corridor looks to enhance "Labor & Industry" by expanding the offerings in a larger venue in Tremont - the Asterisk Gallery. The idea is to continue to associate the exhibit with Labor Day and use Tremont's current position as a destination Art District for promotion.

Fair time. (8/05-10)

Can you believe it’s August? I can’t. I still have lots of things I need to “get in” to call it an official summer. A game of put put golf at Memphis Kiddie Park. A few more trips out on the Kayaks. Ice cream at Honey Hut and perhaps even an evening of firefly collecting (just kidding...sorta). But most of all summer in Cleveland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the fair!

The Cuyahoga County Fair runs now until Sunday at the Berea Fairgrounds. Pack your Purell and go to oogle the baby pigs and cows, the best tasting blueberry pies, the gorgeous gladiolas grown-locally and more. General admission is $5.95 (children 3-12 yrs old $4.95) or after 9:30 pm, $3.00. If you want to take a spin on the Ferris wheel or bumper cars (my favorite) ride tickets are $.50 each (2 tickets per ride) or purchase an all-day ride band for just $12.



What could be more summer than a evening at the fair? Cotton Candy (love the sweet smell and baby pink hue) and corn on the cob. Live music and motor sports. Activities for you (flea market) the kids (bubble gum blowing contest) and your strange “uncle Eric” (the great bear show). Add it to this weekend’s list.

Lakewood Art Festival (8/02)

The 31st Annual Lakewood Arts Festival will be held this weekend from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m on Detroit Avenue from Elmwood to Belle Avenues.

For over thirty years, the Lakewood Art Festival has brought local and national artists to the streets of Lakewood, Ohio the first weekend in August. The Lakewood Downtown Arts Festival, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that administers the show with the help of a team of hard-working volunteers and the cooperation of the city of Lakewood, Ohio. The festival supports itself with money raised by entry fees, donations from community merchants, sponsorship funds and t-shirt sales.

Every year a line-up of fine musical entertainment is scheduled throughout the day. This year Rachel Roberts from Akron will perform live at 12:30, she is a must-see! Be there.



Besides supporting the festival itself, money earned or donated goes towards a scholarship for a local high school graduate, a Lakewood resident, pursuing a degree in fine arts, and toward grants awarded local organizations presenting art programs for children and seniors in Lakewood.

Triathlon (8/03)

Sunday, August 3rd join Pacific Sports as they present the Cleveland Triathlon taking place in and around downtown.

If you plan on watching the event, head downtown to just north of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where the transition/athlete area will be. Or, take your bike and ride down to the closed-off shoreway for a view of the bikers, post-swim, pre-run!

Only a week left to go until the big race...time to hit the gym tonight (and a few more times this week) to work off some of the crap I ate over the weekend. It’s all good, nothing a few times on the espresso bikes and treadmill can’t fix. :) Hope to see everyone at the race!

The Ingenuity Festival returns with a weekend-long celebration of art and technology, designed for audiences of any age and experience, staged in the center of Downtown Cleveland. Prominent international masters present original works alongside the finest of Northeast Ohio's performing and visual artists. High technology firms and major colleges and universities are presented alongside acclaimed artists to create a dazzling display of exciting and immersive new work! Ingenuity pushes boundaries, creating a unique festival experience that draws and celebrates diversity, and involves the audience as both spectator and participant!



There are so many interesting looking shows, exhibits and installations, but one that I deffinatley want to catch will be a late night performance by the Hot Cha Cha's Friday night at the Plain Dealer Star Plaza Stage.

Oh and if you haven't been to the Opening Ceremony (Friday, July 25 4-5:30 pm) before, it is worth it to skip out of work early for the big show...let's just say...it's Magical. :)

Art Future

Although the entire museum is still under development, there are bits and pieces that are open. See the exhibition on view now at the Cleveland Museum of Art; Building for the Future.

The plan developed by the founders of the Museum was to erect a beautiful building, fill it with the finest works of art that could be found, and open its doors to the people of this city free of charge, was not only simple, it was also effective. Today, the museum welcomes about 500,000 visitors each year and its collection, which numbers more than 42,000 works of art, is widely acknowledged as one of the finest in the world.



To accommodate the growth of its collection and educational activities, the museum expanded several times in the past 50 years. While these additions provided much-needed galleries, classrooms, and workspaces, they also gradually obscured the clarity of the original plan and created an odd assortment of buildings that were difficult for visitors to make their way through and, by the end of the last decade, in need of major improvements and repairs.

To address these problems and to enable it to serve the needs of the community in the future, the Cleveland Museum of Art has recently embarked upon a major renovation and expansion. Scheduled for completion in 2011, this project will quite literally transform the museum and, at the same time, sustain the vision of its founders, who believed that the arts should be accessible to all.
