Peaceful holiday weekend.

Well folks, where has December gone? As I grow older I realize how the term "time flies" is so very true. One day it's the 4th of July and the next is Christmas. I mean don't get me wrong, I've cherished each gingerbread man and peppermint stick...I've mixed and mingled. I've indulged in sweets and savory treats. I've stayed up late painting the town red. All the while...jingling all the way.

But with all this said..I'm ready for a weekend of peaceful holiday cheer. I'm one of those lucky few to be done shopping, all wrapped and shipped and now I get to enjoy the reason for the season.

A few things that are on my non-crazy holiday weekend MAY include...
- Wearing my "caterer-friend" hat and working a swanky holiday party with Cleveland's richy rich.

- An impromptu brunch with ELEVEN really great women.

- A sampling of fine cheese and wines at Baricelli Inn.

- If I realize I forgot someone on my list, maybe a stop into the Last Minute Market at the Lake Erie Screw Factory.

- Perhaps dinner "Christmas Story Style" at Touch...including Peking Duck.

- A bit of caroling with the Ohio City Singers at Happy Dog.

- Sunday jazz brunch with artists and friends at Flying Fig

- Maybe I'll even go see Santa to sit on his lap and let him know that for Christmas this year all I really want is a glittering of snow and peace of mind in the new year...okay, and maybe a sweater or two from J.Crew! :)

Happy holiday weekend to all and to all a good night.

Give back

You are blessed.

Anyone who has time to squeeze in a blog read or two is blessed.

You have health. You have family & friends. And most likely each evening your heat is turned up to a toasty 68 degrees.

Every holiday season, it gets me thinking how lucky and blessed I am and how I could help those who aren't so lucky.

Have you ever worked at a soup kitchen? It really opens your eyes to how blessed you are. It awakens the compassionate soul and teaches you the idea of being so truly humble and grateful.

If you have always wanted to try to volunteer at a soup kitchen here are a few things you should consider....

1. Find out which soup kitchens are located in your area. Do a search online, look in the phone book, call information or ask your city or town clerk.

Some of the larger Cleveland area soup kitchens that need are....
> Zion Soup Kitchen (call 216.861.2371)
> St Malachi Center (call 216.771.3036)
> Trinity Cathedral (call 216.774.0425)
> Cleveland Catholic Charities (call 216.334.2961)

2. Contact a local soup kitchen and tell them you'd like to help.

3. Organize a group of people from your circle of friends, your neighborhood, work, your church or synagogue who are willing to volunteer on Thanksgiving.

4. Understand that the soup kitchen needs lots of help in other areas besides food service. Offer to pick up donations, do an inventory on them and store them away. You might also set up tables, prepare the food and help clean up after the meal is through.

5. Include your children in your efforts. This is a great way to teach them the importance of community service.

6. Consider making this a tradition in your family every year. Counting your blessings and helping people in need is a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving.

If you have other volunteer options or ideas please make a comment.

Bakery Breakfast

With the time change and the bright morning skies, I feel like I have all the time in the world before my work day begins. Yesterday I took my little pup for a long walk to the Lake, while this morning I made a pit stop at the new bakery, Blackbird Baking Company. With the brisk temps outside there is something so comforting in a warm cup of coffee and something sweet and yummy for breakfast.

This morning I was lucky enough to arrive as they were pulling the Pumpkin Pecan (seasonal flavor) Cookies from the oven. The soft, chewy and sugar-coated treat reminded me of a cross between a moist pumpkin pie and my moms banana bread.

If you miss this cookie flavor some of the other goodies include Cranberry Oat Cookies ("oat," it MUST be healthy?), my friend Elizabeth really likes the Sweet Cream Biscuits, Cleveland Magazine voted the Stick Buns the "Best" and the french baguettes make every sandwich or bowl of fall soup better.

If you can carve out an extra 15 minutes, swing by the new Blackbird Baking Co. for your fall carb. fix! Located in Lakewood before you cross the Detroit Ave bridge to "River."

Bridge Party (9/25-26)

Friday September 25th and Saturday September 26th, 2009

So, I get this email from a friend of mine who lives in California..she says I simply "MUST" check out this event. (I think it's great that a West Coast "Clevelander" still keeps up with the happenings of our great city, I sorta think she may have been a bit jealous? Just a tad.)

Anyways, have you heard of the big Bridge Party that happening this week? The summer “Ingenuity” festival will expand beyond its weekend festival and transform one of the most fascinating urban spaces in the City into a center of art and performance. An urban space that lies central to Cleveland with spectacular views of downtown, the Cuyahoga River, the Flats, Lake Erie: the streetcar level of the Detroit Superior Bridge, immediately below and parallel to the vehicular level.

Free to the public it will include arts and crafts vendors, food and beverage vendors (including beer and wine), bands and solo performers positioned across the great span of the bridge with the more complex installations and performances taking place at either end. The event will include, as at all Ingenuity events, most exhibits and performances are family friendly and each night closes with a musical event.

Friday, July 24th through Sunday July 26th, 2009

If you are craving some corn beef & cabbage, or perhaps a bit of "river-dance" plan to attend this weekends Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival at the Berea Fairgrounds

I think the highlight of the festival should be the irish girl band, The Screaming Orphans. The lassies are four funny, high-spirited, musically-obsessed sisters with the good fortune to have been raised in the magic of Bundoran in County Donegal Ireland. Don't miss em. Cleveland Weekend (7/10)

There is so much happening around town this weekend...what to do first?

Here are some amazing events/activities you may not want to miss...

INGENUITY FESTIVAL CLEVELAND : I hear that tonights performance by Peachcake is going to be "sweet."

CAIN PARK ARTS FESTIVAL : Feel like spending the day strolling under the shade of gorgeous trees and viewing art from all types? This festival is always well attended with quality work.

BEACH : Looking for a beach to explore? Ever been to Mentor Headlands? A deep, white sandy beach...the perfect day trip.

RIDES FOR THE "LITTLES" : Even though it may rain on Saturday, the Memphis Kiddie Park has you covered. With many rides under an array of striped awnings you can dodge the heat or the rain and entertain for hours of fun. PLUS, for the grown ups there is a "vintage" put put course guaranteed for hours of fun.

Hope these few ideas kicked off your weekend planning. Aren't summer weekends super fun to plan? I think so too.

Good Pickin!

It’s almost officially summer (6/21), how do I know? Because the berry patches are filled with juicy, finger-staining creations... aka Strawberries.

Last weekend a friend of mine and I took in the early morning sunshine and set out to pick us some berries. We drove to Avon and south on Rt. 83 to a berry palace called Fitch Farms. We drove the hay filled tractor trailer back into the fields. Pick one...eat two...pick three...eat two....I know we picked 4 quarts (one basket) but I wonder how many we ate along the way? Shhhh.

Fitch's Farm Market is a sixth generation vegetable farm. In-market and pick-your-own vegetables are available while in season. Beginning in late April, vegetable and flower plants are also available. Berry picking times are as follows...Mon-Fri 9:30 - 7:00 (you could squeeze it in after work some evening), Saturday 9:30 - 5:00 and Sunday 11:30 - 5:00. For other details give them a call at (440) 934-6125.

Also, be warned, Strawberries stain, I used to have a white tank top...now I have a white tank top with pink polka dots! :)

It's Blossom Time (5/21-25)

Thursday May 21st - Monday, May 25th, 2009

Looks like this weekend is going to be SPECTACULAR! I am so excited because I am going to experience Blossom Festival in Chagrin Falls for the very first time! Hot air balloon races, pie eating contests, music, carnival rides and a race (Sunday @ 9am), my kinda weekend!

Join the residents of the Chagrin Falls as they welcome the arrival of warmer weather to the Falls. With flowers and trees in full bloom, the Chagrin Falls area is transformed from a winter wonderland into a warm, peaceful, enchanting place to spend your lazy summer evenings. After shopping, eating, rides, and games at the festival, don't forget to spend some quality time enjoying the natural beauty of the area homes, gardens, parks, and the Chagrin River.

I think the best part of the weekend (besides the cotton candy) will be all the hot air balloons scattered over the village sky. There is something about a hot air balloon that hypnotizes me. Perhaps it’s the purring sound of the rush of flames being thrown into the sky, or the quiet calmness that hovers over the crowd as they watch in astonishment. Anyone want to get up early and meet me out there to watch the balloons take off Sunday morning, 6:00am, I will bring the coffee?

For those of you who think they are as cool as I do, check out these few fun facts....
• the most popular balloon is as tall as a 7-story building
• the average balloon costs $20,000 to $40,000
• ideal times to fly are just after sunrise and just before sunset
• a hot air balloon can land in water
• balloons can stay up for 1-2 hours depending on conditions and occupants
• inflating a balloon takes about 15 minutes
• invented back in 1783 in Paris, France (GO PARIS!)

Pecha Kucha (5/08)

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Pecha Kucha - Japanese for the sound of conversation - was conceived as an opportunity for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. Without any pushing, Pecha Kucha Night has spread virally to over 100 cities across the world.

8:20pm. Free, no tickets necessary. This event will take place either just outside MOCA on the grass below their windows or inside the museum. For more information visit www.mocacleveland.org

breakfast for a buck (3/22-27)

Tuesday, March 22nd through Thursday the 26th, 2009

Stopped into the "Big Egg" lately? I did. A few Saturdays ago I grabbed a tasty egg sandwich (2 eggs & cheddar cheese on a toasted english muffin, yumm) and though very messy to eat, it was completely worth it!

I have heard many stories of this Cleveland landmark-most of them before I moved to this city. Cleveland, it's time to make some new stories and this week the Big Egg is helping you do so, BREAKFAST for 1 PENNY. You can get two eggs, hash browns, and toast for a penny after the purchase of a drink.

The new owners said they want to bring the family feel back to the restaurant and this week they are giving back. So stop in this week from SIX to EIGHT AM (the early bird catches the worm!) and enjoy a cheap treat. :)

p.s. Sorry party-people, "the egg" is no longer open 24 hours a day.

Warm thoughts & the greenhouse

Cleveland it’s cold! But come on...we are in Ohio, wait five minutes and the weather will shift. See, we have this large body of water which greatly effects how the temps will swing, one day it’s 18 and the next it’s 50. Where else can you experience such “flexible” weather patterns?

I have heard a ton of complaints and even “prayers to the gods” to make spring come faster this year. For those cold babies, I have a few ideas I will try and share throughout the next few winter weeks.

Thought #1

While most of us are aware of the grandiose beauty that lies within the glasshouse at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens (www.cbgarden.org), have you ever visited the Rockefeller Park Greenhouse (aka : City of Cleveland Greenhouse)? Built in 1912 and located just off 90 on MLK, this greenhouse not only grows all of the plants used in the city landscaping it also is a place of wonderment, discovery and "vacation."

Don’t have the cash to escape the cold and get to the tropics? The greenhouse has a vast collection of orchids and citrus trees. Wish you could fly to the desert for a blast of the hot (but wicked dry) air? The garden has a room filled with cacti and succulents. This weekend pack your lunch, grab your notepad and colored pencils and head over to the garden for a few hours of warmth in the greenhouse. Note* unlike the larger botanical garden (although I LOVE this museum too), this greenhouse museum is free (thanks to our tax dollars at work!) and open daily from 10-4.

Winter lights

As we approach the Christmas holiday, take a few minutes to warm the car, a thermos mug of hot cocoa and head out to scope the best holiday light display in your Cleveland area neighborhood.

Last night, myself and a friend of mine bundled up her little elf and made our way out to Westlake, OH to see the holiday light displays. Columbia Road (south of Detroit) has many homeowners willing to spend their hard earned cash on electricity bills for everyone to enjoy the thousands of twinkling bulbs.

From Santa to dancing penguins, nodding reindeer to candy cane fences, we saw it all. There is something to be said about jumping in and out of a warm car on a FOUR degree night, but the excitement of capturing a small child in the middle of an outrageous light display was well worth it.

Do you have a neighborhood filled with lights? A MUST-See that you want to share? Please send me your suggestions and we will drive down your street next. :)

Christmas Cabaret (12/17-18)

Wednesday & Thursday December 17th & 18th, 2008

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, of course. And Rudolph and Frosty. And “White Christmas” and “Silver Bells” and “Sleigh Ride.” But do you know the Santa Claus portrayed by Irving Berlin in 1916? If not, you’d better listen, because he means business: “Don’t act like a fool, and don’t play hooky from school. If you do anything that’s shocking, you’ll find an empty stocking!”

During the holiday season, nationally syndicated radio host Bill Rudman brings his popular “Christmas Cabaret” back to Cleveland's own, NightTown. This delightful show combines evergreen Christmas standards from the Great American Songbook with festive curiosities like Berlin’s “Syncopated Christmas Song.”

There are more than 30 songs in the show, says Rudman: “We do ‘A Jazz Christmas Carol’ – Jerome Kern’s title for his 1917 ragtime version of ‘God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.’ We perform a holiday song that George Gershwin composed at the age of 21. And it turns out that Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote a Christmas song in 1952 – and even Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim wrote one seven years later.

Don't miss the third annual presentation of "A Christmas Cabaret" live at Nighttown. 7pm $20 a ticket. For directions & ticket information visit www.nighttowncleveland.com

Celebrate Polka

I knew that Polka was BIG here in Cleveland, but what I didn't know was that we actually have a National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame located in our backyard!

The Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of polka music, the happiest sound around. Polka has its roots in Slovenian folk music, but the influence of American musicians has given it universal appeal and popularity. Just as English and Irish music has evolved into country music, the polka represents the music of central Europe.

The Polka Hall of Fame and Museum is located in the Shore Cultural Center in Euclid, Ohio, in close proximity to the Collinwood neighborhood where leading polka musicians lived such as Frankie Yankovic, Johnny Vadnal, Johnny Pecon and Eddie Habat. The Museum has free admission and is open five days a week. For directions and holiday hours visit www.clevelandstyle.com

Weekend Skate

I love the winter air whipping by my cheeks on a cool afternoon, balanced atop of blades of steel as I push and glide atop a rink of new ice. This weekend the new University Circle outdoor ice skating is making it's debut...Sort of, more like high-density polyethylene skating.

Workers have assembled the jigsaw sheets of the milk jug-like surface in the grassy area between the Cleveland Botanical Gardens and Natural History Museum this week, along with lights for night skating and temporary buildings for concessions and skate rental.

It will be open to the public for free, mostly on weekends, until Feb. 16. Fridays and Saturdays : noon to 7pm Sundays : noon to 5 pm. To double check hours visit www.universitycircle.org. Don't forget to bring your mittens it's going to be a chilly weekend.

Movie Journey

Mysteries of the Great Lakes

Ever wanted to explore the ecology of our inland seas, its threatened species and conservation efforts? Looking for something to do, other than shopping, this weekend? Than why not take a holiday break or a long lunch and go experience the “Mysteries of the Great Lakes” playing at the Great Lakes Science Center.

It takes a drop of water nearly 400 years to travel from the headwaters of Lake Superior to the edge of Lake Ontario. Along the way, the water passes by towering cliffs dotted with early Native American pictographs, caribou and moose grazing on the shores, over giant prehistoric sturgeon lurking among thousands of shipwrecks and past nearly 40 million people who live along the more than 10,000 miles of coastline. It is a dramatic journey through some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. It’s a MUST SEE!

Chalk Festival (9/20-21)

Saturday & Sunday, September 20th & 21st, 2008

In 16th-century Italy, beggars, using chalk on the plazas outside cathedrals, copied paintings of the Madonna by Raphael and his contemporaries. With these street painters, called I Madonnari (painters of the Madonna), an artistic tradition was born. Today I Madonnari festivals are held annually in Europe, Africa, and the United States. Our festival brings this Renaissance tradition to Cleveland. Enjoy chalk artists and entertainment at no charge at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Featured Chalk Artists are Story Lee Cadiz, Mark Jenks, George Kozmon, Wendy Mahon, Debra Sue Solecki, Rafael Valdivieso, Robin VanLear

You too can chalk your own pictures large square and 24-color box of chalk: $16 each, small square and 12-color box of chalk: $8 each Children under 15 must be accompanied by supervising adults.

Blast off! (8/30-9/01)

As the "official" summer season draw to a close, the Labor Day Weekend would not be complete without catching a glimpse of jets, planes and more jets! The swoosh and whirl of the engines, is enough to tingle the spine of all; from wee ones to us adults.

This weekend, Cleveland will host the U.S. Navy Blue Angels as headliners of the 2008 Cleveland National Air Show at Burke Lakefront Airport. Each show day, the six "Blues" demonstration pilots will thrill air show fans with a one hour choreographed presentation that includes the graceful aerobatics of the four plane Diamond Formation, exciting high energy maneuvers by the two solo pilots and a JATO demonstration by the Blue Angles C-130 Hercules support aircraft affectionately known as "Fat Albert".

Last year a friend of ours took us out on his boat and it was insane! I swear you could reach out and touch the planes themselves. Get there early for the perfect bleacher seats...or if you'd like, ride your bike to a high hill overlooking downtown, relax and avoid the crowds all together. Whichever way you choose to see the show, I hope it sends tingles down your spine...

Enjoy your Sunday afternoon strolling around our lovely downtown historic warehouse district at the fourth annual street festival. Enjoy, fabulous local faire, open houses of dramatic lofts and condos, an art show and things to do with the kids are some of the happenings you’ll find. One of the areas local band faves called the Spazmatics (80’s pop cover band) will be playing on one of the three entertainment stages kicking off at 5:00pm. If you want to listen to less “Duran Duran” and more “Ella,” the Northcoast Jazz Collective will be performing in front of the Hoyt Block Building from 1-4pm. Amuse me.

I have to confess, I recently purchased an 'Everyday with Rachel Ray Magazine,' for work reference only. I am not a big Ray fan in general but this issue was filled many Cleveland references that I couldn't resist sharing.

The big story, America's Greatest Amusement Parks, Bigger! Faster! Taller! features the one and only Cedar Point. For a low (?) cost of $43 a ticket ($16 for children) you can visit this 138-year-old Ohio summertime institution. Get there early and plan to stay late (park closes at 10:00 pm) as there are so many roller coaters at this park, and you can't ride just once.

Some of my favorites (and Rachel's) are the Raptor (I love to let my legs hang free and flip over almost 6 times) and Millennium Force (what could be better than flying at 93 mph?). I haven't had the opportunity to ride Maverick yet but I can't wait to check it out. A day at Cedar Point isn't complete without a visit to Frontier Trail to watch the artisans blow glass and bend steel, true craftsman.

Picking up the pub at the checkout aisle at least got me re-excited to visit our "neighborhood" amusement park. Still not a big fan of the "fire pistol," but at least we see eye-to-eye one one thing...the Top Thrill Dragster is a killer way to kick off your day at the park. We should go sometime! :)

Fair time. (8/05-10)

Can you believe it’s August? I can’t. I still have lots of things I need to “get in” to call it an official summer. A game of put put golf at Memphis Kiddie Park. A few more trips out on the Kayaks. Ice cream at Honey Hut and perhaps even an evening of firefly collecting (just kidding...sorta). But most of all summer in Cleveland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the fair!

The Cuyahoga County Fair runs now until Sunday at the Berea Fairgrounds. Pack your Purell and go to oogle the baby pigs and cows, the best tasting blueberry pies, the gorgeous gladiolas grown-locally and more. General admission is $5.95 (children 3-12 yrs old $4.95) or after 9:30 pm, $3.00. If you want to take a spin on the Ferris wheel or bumper cars (my favorite) ride tickets are $.50 each (2 tickets per ride) or purchase an all-day ride band for just $12.

What could be more summer than a evening at the fair? Cotton Candy (love the sweet smell and baby pink hue) and corn on the cob. Live music and motor sports. Activities for you (flea market) the kids (bubble gum blowing contest) and your strange “uncle Eric” (the great bear show). Add it to this weekend’s list.

Triathlon (8/03)

“It’s a Hot Man Parade.” - Quoted from Joanne on watching triathlons

Sunday, August 3rd join Pacific Sports as they present the Cleveland Triathlon taking place in and around downtown.

If you plan on watching the event, head downtown to just north of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where the transition/athlete area will be. Or, take your bike and ride down to the closed-off shoreway for a view of the bikers, post-swim, pre-run!

Start times and distances. (It’s early, beware!)
6:45 am Super Sprint (300-yard swim, 8-mile bike, 1.5-mile run)
7:15 am Sprint (0.5m Swim, 16m Bike, 5k Run) [My race of choice]
7:45 am Olympic (1.5k Swim, 24m Bike, 10k Run)

Only a week left to go until the big race...time to hit the gym tonight (and a few more times this week) to work off some of the crap I ate over the weekend. It’s all good, nothing a few times on the espresso bikes and treadmill can’t fix. :) Hope to see everyone at the race!

Home Grown Film (7/27)

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Lakewood Earth & Food Community presents the film...Real Low Calorie Diet. This movie captures a movement across Northeast Ohio to change the way that we eat. As the film reveals through interviews, animation, and beautiful footage of the city and the countryside, the simple act of eating locally honors our land, our communities, and our rich natural heritage. From climate change to nutritional issues in the inner-city, this film demonstrates that many innovations to our social problems are already taking place at the grassroots level, where the real hope for our democracy lies.

Eat right, preserve the environment, and safeguard democracy. 2:00 p.m. in the new Lakewood Main Library Auditorium.

Carmona returns (7/26)

Saturday, July 26th 2008

Carmona cleared to return Saturday, right-hander hasn't pitched for Tribe since May 23! When the 40-pitch 'pen was over Tuesday at Angel Stadium, Fausto Carmona, nine weeks after landing on the disabled list with a left hip strain, got his official clearance to rejoin the Indians' rotation Saturday against the Twins. Manager Eric Wedge wouldn't speculate on what the corresponding roster move will be Saturday. "We're playing it day by day in regard to that," Wedge said. "We don't have to do anything until Saturday."

What could be better than a baseball game this weekend? There are so many things happening this weekend in Cleveland but with a close friend in from out of town, nothing is better than a Sunday afternoon ball game, a cold beer and the ultimate "I" soft pretzel (and lots of sunscreen!)?

The Tribe will be in town all weekend (Friday, Saturday & an afternoon game Sunday). For game times and ticket information visit www.cleveland.indians.mlb.com

Our Day on the RTA

I don’t know what sparked the idea, but a few months back myself and my good friend had a spark of inspiration that it may be fun to spend the day taking in the sites of Cleveland by way of our Public Transportation System, the RTA. A whole day with no car, a day to see the city out the windows of the bus, a day to stand and wait for our turn to hop aboard the wheels that keep the Greater Cleveland public moving along.

A few days in advance, our plans were made, our PDF maps printed, our canvas tote bags, umbrellas, sunglasses and rolls of quarters all laid out and ready for the adventure that lie ahead. We were like little kids the night before Christmas, giddy with excitement.

At 10:05 sharp we left our cars in an empty Rapid parking lot. As we rode the escalator up to the train we could hear the brakes of an oncoming train, and noticing fellow riders running to meet the arrival, we followed suit and booked down the stairs to the platform below. (note* even comfy wedge heels don’t make for good running shoes!) As we slipped into the seats of the red line heading east, the fellow passengers were a mix of young and old, people were sleeping, jamming to their headphones and catching up on the morning paper. Looking at the city from the windows of the train you see the Cleveland in ways you may never have in your own car. The colorful graffiti that lines the concrete walls, the crumbling vintage advertising painted on the side of an old building, the neighborhoods that back up to the tracks...it’s all a visual delight.

As our first stop, W 25th/Ohio City approached our stomachs were growling for food. So off to the Westside Market Café we went. (upcoming post) After an amazing breakfast we decided to hang out and explore the area on foot. After a thorough visit to the market (upcoming post), a walk through St Ignatius Campus, A trip to Unique Thrift, the German grocery Store-Hansa Import Store (upcoming post) and the West 25th Bookstore we decided to grab a bus to our second destination...downtown.

Bus 22 took us to the center of our fair city, Public Square. We did run into a few “characters” on this ride, giving us unsolicited advice about “two girls riding the bus,” yadda yadda, you can only imagine...needless to say we arrived safely. Downtown was quiet, the sun was out and it seemed you could hear a pin drop. As we climbed the stairs of the Sailors and Soldiers Monument (upcoming post) we were curious to see what was actually inside this amazing architectural structure. Once through the monument we decided to walk over the the Public Library Reading Garden (upcoming post) relax for a bit, and have a snack that we bought earlier at the Market. After resting our feet we continued to walk over to Mall B and take in the latest public art installation (upcoming post) then made our way over to the infamous FREE Stamp (upcoming post). After a moment for some funny photos, we proceeded to walk over to the waterfront for a visit to the USS COD (upcoming post). I can honestly say that besides taking the trains and buses around the city this submarine had to be the most fascinating part of my day.

It was now around 3:30 and time to head east, so we made our way back up East 9th and looked for the closest bus stop to grab our next ride, Bus 6. After waiting just a few minutes, time enough to look around, take in the construction site and historical architecture lining Euclid Avenue, our bus had arrived. Did you know it only costs $4 for an all day pass? What a bargain! We slowly made our way up Euclid, enjoying the new bus-only lane. The crowd was a bit more “alive” than previous rides. The older women with stories to share, the children giggling as they approached their stops, the teens ready to hit the town running...it was a colorful crowd.

Our stop at Euclid & East 79th had arrived and it was time for an early dinner at that pink building on Carnegie...the Hot Sauce King, Hot Sauce Williams. You’ve never eaten better friend okra and wings that those of Williams, the wet hand wipes we purchased earlier in the day sure did come in handy. After dinner we continued the trip East heading over to University Circle.

As we were on the bus we noticed the sky becoming dark and the winds picking up. Were we going to be caught with NO CAR in this thunderstorm? YES. As we stood like wet cats in the rain, our clothes soaked (the umbrellas we packed gave little protection to the afternoon downpour), we stood huddled in the alcoves of Severance Hall waiting for the next bus. As much as we had intended to make it to Shaker Square for an evening of live music on the Square, we hopped aboard and headed back west to Public Square for the Rapid back home. The damp bus ride was so quiet, everyone wet from the afternoon storm. Sticky umbrellas. Chilly from the air conditioning that was meant to keep passengers content. As we ran from the drop off at Public Square to the entrance at Terminal Tower we were hit with monsoon number two. At this point we couldn’t help but to laugh, although we were literally soaked, our spirits were so high from a day of complete fascination and public transportation. I seriously have NEVER in the ten years I have know my friend ever heard her laugh so loud. It was great.

As we made our way down to the RTA epicenter in Tower City we noticed we weren’t the only rained on passengers, everyone was soaked. It stirred comradery amongst us and everyone smiled and shook their heads. Already reliving the stories from the day it was time to get home...by way of our cars. Time to change out of our soaked clothes, put away our finds from the day and file the memories of our day with the RTA.

We strongly recommend taking a day this summer to explore Cleveland by way of RTA, North America’s BEST Public Transportation System; 2007.

Beach Review #1

As many of you might know I live on the west side of Cleveland. Since I am a “transplant” to the area the entire “east side vs. west side” concept baffles me. What is it, a total of twenty minutes to get from Lakewood to Beachwood? Not far.

Anyways as a total beach enthusiast, I have taken it upon myself to fully explore many of our beaches around the Northeast Ohio Region...East, West, North and South and report back to you. I tend to go to the beach on Sunday afternoon’s for a day of rest and relaxation. A way of closing the week past and gearing up for the week ahead. I will drive miles for sun, sand and an afternoon filled with catching up on my multiple magazine subscriptions.

Yesterday I am happy to report I spent the afternoon at Mentor Headlands State Park (www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/tabid/742/Default.aspx). This beach was unlike ANY lake beach I have ever experienced. The white sandy beach that stretched out for an entire mile is actually the largest natural sand beach in Ohio and made me feel like I was on vacation...Florida perhaps. The subtle waves, shiny rocks and sea glass were enough to keep me entertained while in and out of the clean, refreshing water (water temp 74 degrees!). One unique feature of this beach is it’s picturesque lighthouse with a long pier; perfect for an evening stroll. This beach also has two refreshment stands one at either end of the beach just in case you forget your large diet coke and twizzlers.

I couldn’t have asked for nicer weather for my adventure out East. If you’ve also been there let me know what you think. Or, if there are other beaches I may not know about please drop me a line. Otherwise, you know where to find me on a Sunday...somewhere by the water.

Funky Festivals (6/14-15)

Not only is this weekend one devoted to Dad...it is also the weekend for unique festivals...where else can you celebrate Duct Tape & Washboards? Only in Ohio!

Head to the Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival in Avon, Ohio, "Duct Tape Capital of the World," the place where Duck brand duct tape is made, duct tape shows up in parade floats, hats, clothing, sculptures and crafts. You name it, you can make it with duct tape seems to be the festival motto. Along with the duct tape events there are rides, food and music. If something breaks down during this weekend, like a ride seat cushion gets a small tear, there will be plenty of stuff on hand to fix it.

Here's another Father's Day weekend option. Not to pull you away from the Duct Tape Festival plans you may have made, but the Washboard Festival, would make a fun day trip if you live close enough to Logan, Ohio. This festival celebrates the music traditions that stretch from Appalachia to the Louisiana bayou. Dating back to the mid-1800s, this is the kind of music that is guaranteed to put you in a happy mood.

The musicians are renowned, and if you've ever heard a Zydeco band, you'll know that it's impossible to stay still once the music starts. Dixieland Jazz and Jug Music are part of the two day event. If you haven't been to town-run festival, you're missing out on one of the greatest parts of summer. This one is particularly special because tours of the Columbus Washboard Factory are included. This is the last washboard company in the United States.

Logan is at the threshold of Hocking Hills, one of the most beautiful areas in Ohio. If you can stretch your weekend into another day, take some time to see where your exploration takes you.
