Glog on the Blog

Happy Monday Cleveland!

Hope everyone enjoyed the cool winter weekend as much as I did. With my visitor in town I sure did pack a lot into the holiday weekend. One of the things I wanted to "report" on was this funky little drink I experienced at the Greenhouse Tavern..."Glog!"

Glog, defined in the dictionary as a "hot spiced wine and liquor punch and it is a delicious warming drink. Glog is a traditional drink of the Swedish & Finnish Advent season. Traditionally made with red wine, and each small glass has a few almonds and raisins in it as well as the drink. Glog's origins are with mulled wine - wine heated with spices. Glog also tends to have more sugar as well as a heavier alcohol content. It is said that Glog cures the common cold.

The bartenders at The Greenhouse were kind enough to show me how they made their new holiday drink. The drink is assembled using special house made glog mix & honey liquor, steamed and then accessorized with little golden raisins.

Be warned...I took a big sniff (from my brandy snifter) and wow...I thought I burned off my nose hairs...let's just say it's potent...in a good way! :)

I still can't 100% say I loved it, but I can't stop thinking about this potent hot toddy, so I guess it made an impression on me. Let me know what you think!

Vintage Holiday

The other day I made a quick trip to one of the areas BEST vintage shops around, Flower Child. The holiday windows of old sleds and Xmas cheers drew me inside like a mosquito to a buzzing blue lantern.

Although I had expected to see a mirage of decorations of days gone by, I had no clue the intensity and overwhelming shimmer and glitz that was about to come before me.

The store is filled with every type of holiday decoration you can imagine. From vintage lights, holiday cocktail glasses, delicate glass bulbs, ornate holiday linens, something from the 40's, something from the 80's (see ET stockings!), a pink themed room, a green themed room, a candy cane and mistletoe room....whatever you holiday dreams they have the decorations for you.

This weekend will be a big "get ready for the holidays" weekend. Why not shop local and recycle the past by adding a touch of flair from Flower Child. BUT, be prepared...this store will suck up hours of time on the weekend, so wear comfy shoes and a good friend for hours of fun.

FYI, there is a Starbucks across the street in case you need a gingerbread jolt of energy to make it through the entire newly expanded basement of the store. Happy holidays!

Give back

You are blessed.

Anyone who has time to squeeze in a blog read or two is blessed.

You have health. You have family & friends. And most likely each evening your heat is turned up to a toasty 68 degrees.

Every holiday season, it gets me thinking how lucky and blessed I am and how I could help those who aren't so lucky.

Have you ever worked at a soup kitchen? It really opens your eyes to how blessed you are. It awakens the compassionate soul and teaches you the idea of being so truly humble and grateful.

If you have always wanted to try to volunteer at a soup kitchen here are a few things you should consider....

1. Find out which soup kitchens are located in your area. Do a search online, look in the phone book, call information or ask your city or town clerk.

Some of the larger Cleveland area soup kitchens that need are....
> Zion Soup Kitchen (call 216.861.2371)
> St Malachi Center (call 216.771.3036)
> Trinity Cathedral (call 216.774.0425)
> Cleveland Catholic Charities (call 216.334.2961)

2. Contact a local soup kitchen and tell them you'd like to help.

3. Organize a group of people from your circle of friends, your neighborhood, work, your church or synagogue who are willing to volunteer on Thanksgiving.

4. Understand that the soup kitchen needs lots of help in other areas besides food service. Offer to pick up donations, do an inventory on them and store them away. You might also set up tables, prepare the food and help clean up after the meal is through.

5. Include your children in your efforts. This is a great way to teach them the importance of community service.

6. Consider making this a tradition in your family every year. Counting your blessings and helping people in need is a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving.

If you have other volunteer options or ideas please make a comment.

a Wicked weekend

Halloween is my favorite holiday! The warm colors, the spicy scents, the sassy costumes, the sugary sweets it all adds up to the celebration of fall. Plus we fall back so we get a bonus hour of sleep.

This weekend along with bobbin for apples see if you can squeeze any of these little treats to your weekend rundown...

- An “All You Can Eat Buffet
- A Party with the Dead
- A little Coco before Chanel
- Hoops with the boys
- Being okay with Miss Michaelson

So Happy HAlloween to everyone in the "Land-of-Cleve," and might I warn you, don't come by my house without a costume or you won't get any candy. :)

Doughnut adventure

Hi Cleveland and Happy Halloween-Thursday (let the junk food raid begin!)

Lately I have been dreaming of driving from one side of town to the other filling my picnic basket with doughnuts from area fryers and blowing any sort of healthy-living ideas out the window. Unfortunately I have not been able to squeeze in this dreamy doughnut adventure, try as I may, it just won’t happen pre-Friday.

My initial intention of this nutty trip was to assemble a really great plethora of ideas for where you could go Halloween morning as the wizards and witches rise from bed in anticipation of the treat-filled day ahead. Well, instead of all the extra calories, I’ll just give you a brief rundown on some of the spots I have been to over my tenure in Cleveland...

> Doughnut Pantry : 14600 Madison Ave., Lakewood : Saturday 6am-2pm (a bare bones, not fancy, get-em-while-their hot place)

> Spudnuts : 21800 Center Ridge Rd. Rocky River (sweets made from potatoes? Carbs + sugar, yumm)

> Fragapane Bakeries : 650 Dover Center Rd., Bay Village (my friend Meg swears by this place, it has to be good!)

> Prestis : 12101 Mayfield Rd, Little Italy (does Prestis even make doughnuts any more? If not grab anything else, its’ all good!)

> Jack Frost Donuts 4960 Pearl Rd, Cleveland (Saturday 7am- 8pm)

And then there is always Dunkin Doughnuts, Krispy Kreme and even Starbucks is selling good old fashioned sour crème favorites!

Perhaps I will grab a warm doughnut and hit the gym extra hard on Saturday to celebrate the arrival of fall, shorter days and more evenings at the gym :)

Happy doughnut hunting to you.

Pumpkin fun! (10/21)

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

By now I would assume some of you have your upcoming weekend, “to do” list completed. (Groceries. Rake leaves. Concert. Laundry. Buy Pumpkins!) Instead of waiting till this weekend to buy your pumpkin, swing by flourish, grab one of the 1001 pumpkins and give a donation to Harvest For Hunger and the Cleveland Foodbank in exchange for an “orange ball of carving fun.” All donations welcome!

If you’re feeling lucky you might also run into Rebecca Wilde from Q104...she is said to be hanging around the neighborhood giving away Miley Cirus tickets! (I still love “Ms. Montanna,” even though her new rap stinks!) Good lucky tweens & teens alike!

The pumpkin palooza frenzy will begin around 9am and run until 7pm, or while supplies last. Flourish : 1001 Huron Road East. Questions? Call “team get & give” at 216.696.9116.

Thursday, August 13th through Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Cleveland's Feast of the Assumption, is held each year in mid-August in the city's Little Italy neighborhood, it's a four-day street fair that celebrates the Catholic Day of Assumption (August 15), when the Virgin Mary died and assumed her place beside Jesus. The four-day Feast of the Assumption is a wonderful mix of religion and secular fun. The entire length of Mayfield Road, between Euclid Ave and Cleveland Heights is closed off to traffic. In their place are carnival rides, delicious Italian-themed food vendors, arts & crafts booths, and live music stages, playing everything from rock to "It's Amore." In addition, there are fireworks at night and a parade on August 15. The event draws over 100,000 visitors each year. Admission is free.

And I gladly stand up, next to you and defend her still today. ‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA.)? I think I whistle the tune every year around this time.

Winter lights

As we approach the Christmas holiday, take a few minutes to warm the car, a thermos mug of hot cocoa and head out to scope the best holiday light display in your Cleveland area neighborhood.

Last night, myself and a friend of mine bundled up her little elf and made our way out to Westlake, OH to see the holiday light displays. Columbia Road (south of Detroit) has many homeowners willing to spend their hard earned cash on electricity bills for everyone to enjoy the thousands of twinkling bulbs.

From Santa to dancing penguins, nodding reindeer to candy cane fences, we saw it all. There is something to be said about jumping in and out of a warm car on a FOUR degree night, but the excitement of capturing a small child in the middle of an outrageous light display was well worth it.

Do you have a neighborhood filled with lights? A MUST-See that you want to share? Please send me your suggestions and we will drive down your street next. :)

Christmas Cabaret (12/17-18)

Wednesday & Thursday December 17th & 18th, 2008

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, of course. And Rudolph and Frosty. And “White Christmas” and “Silver Bells” and “Sleigh Ride.” But do you know the Santa Claus portrayed by Irving Berlin in 1916? If not, you’d better listen, because he means business: “Don’t act like a fool, and don’t play hooky from school. If you do anything that’s shocking, you’ll find an empty stocking!”

During the holiday season, nationally syndicated radio host Bill Rudman brings his popular “Christmas Cabaret” back to Cleveland's own, NightTown. This delightful show combines evergreen Christmas standards from the Great American Songbook with festive curiosities like Berlin’s “Syncopated Christmas Song.”

There are more than 30 songs in the show, says Rudman: “We do ‘A Jazz Christmas Carol’ – Jerome Kern’s title for his 1917 ragtime version of ‘God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.’ We perform a holiday song that George Gershwin composed at the age of 21. And it turns out that Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote a Christmas song in 1952 – and even Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim wrote one seven years later.

Don't miss the third annual presentation of "A Christmas Cabaret" live at Nighttown. 7pm $20 a ticket. For directions & ticket information visit www.nighttowncleveland.com

Today is National Poinsettia Day.

December 12th, 2008

So, I am totally serious when I say today is National Poinsettia Day. You know, those bright red plants usually spotted as you approach the entrance to your local Giant Eagle or Home Depot? The one wrapped with holiday foil all ready to be purchased for your holiday hostess gift? Yes, those are the ones.

Did you know that poinsettias are native to Mexico? Did you know poinsettias are not poisonous, (a study at OSU showed that a 50 pound child who ate 500 bracts might have a slight tummy ache)? Did you know poinsettias represent over 85 percent of the potted plant sales during the holiday season, 80% purchased by women? Did you know poinsettias have been called the lobster flower?

I happen to really like the white poinsettia plant. They seem so sophisticated and elegant amongst the brightly lit trees and sparkly presents. The plant sings to the joy of the season, simple and gorgeous. Nothing can replicate the beauty of nature. This weekend why not head out to one of these amazing Cleveland nurseries and explore their poinsettia selection.

Ever been to Daisy Hill Greenhouse? Tucked away in Chagrin Falls (34050 Hackney Rd Chagrin Falls, OH 44022) this nursery will blow you away with their selection of interesting pants (including hundreds of orchids & birds of paradise) and actual greenhouse structures that go as far as the eye can see. One thing unique to Daisy Hill is if you are an orchid enthusiast but don’t find joy in misting the plant and bringing them back to bloom, the orchid experts offer a pick up from your home, take back to the nursery and in a few months return the plant filled with blooms back to your home service. An orchid daycare if you will.

Another great poinsettia resource would be your local Petitti Garden Centers (www.petittigardencenter.com). They have many types of plants everything from small centerpiece-ready plants to massive poinsettia explosions. ($2.99-$19.99) Red, pink, polka dotted, white and even ones covered in glitter, the selection is wild. Along with a tropical greenhouse filled with these holiday plants, Petitti also carries an insane variety of holiday ornaments, something for everyone. The displays are over-the-top stunning, and this weekend you can get your picture taken with Santa.

A few little tips I learned about selecting the perfect holiday plant...

> Choose a plant with dark green foliage down to the soil line.
> Choose bracts (modified leaves) that are completely colored.
> Do not purchase poinsettias with a lot of green around the bract edges.
> Do not choose plants with fallen or yellowed leaves
> The poinsettia should look full, balanced and attractive from all sides
> The plant should be 2 1/2 times taller than the diameter of the container
> Choose plants that are not drooping or wilting.
> Do not purchase plants that are displayed in paper or plastic sleeves. Plants held in sleeves will deteriorate quickly
> When you take the poinsettia home, be sure to have it sleeved or covered when outdoor temperatures are below 50°F.

Haunted

I am the type of person to cover my eyes at scary movies. I jump at loud noises. I feel faint at the sight of blood. Let's just say I am probablly not the best candidate for the seasonal haunted house outing.

However, I love the idea of gathering a bunch of friends and creeping around in the dark to the sight of a black light and spider webs. It's the "jumping out," the "Freddy Kreuger-like characters" and the possible threat of nightmares for months that steer me away from participating in the Halloween holiday fun.

For those of you who are able to see past the gore and guts, take a night this week to check out the area haunted houses...

Celebrate Vinyl (8/12)

Hello Cleveland Music fans...

Just a quick note to say that August 12th is National Vinyl Record Day, the date Edison invented the phonograph in 1877.

So go up to the attic and get out your turn table and spin those tunes. Visit the rock hall (www.rockhall.com) and support our music revolution history. Stop by Bent Crayon (www.bentcrayon.com) to take home an imported vinyl treasure...or go see a show tonight where records may still be included...(perhaps Kate Tunstall at HOB will spin a tune or two?)

Don't let the records die. Celebrate vinyl. www.vinylrecordday.com

Shiny Cleveland Fireworks (7/03-05)

I once had a friend who told me I probably was a crow in a past life. Like me, crows love sparkly, shiny objects such as coins, tin foil, gum wrappers or in my case, rhinestones, glitter, a shiny clean car and even better....FIREWORKS!

To get your fill of colorful snap crackle and pop explosions this holiday weekend check out the list of this year's firework displays in the Greater Cleveland area.

Aurora : Sunny Lake Park : Saturday, July 5 @ dusk
Avon Lake : Weiss Field : Thursday, July 3 @ dusk
Bay Village : Cahoon Park : Friday, July 4 @ dusk
Berea : Coe Lake Gazebo : Friday, July 4 at 10 pm

My favorite fireworks are the all white ones that look like they explode in the sky to the shape of a giant daisy and then rain glitter the whole way down to the earth. Perhaps my friend was right...maybe I was a crow? Wonder if crows like fireworks too?

If I have missed any towns or neighborhoods celebrations, feel free to comment and I will post it.

Sock Be Gone (5/08)

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Every year on May 8th No Socks Day is a day to free your toes of the confines of socks and stocking. Give those toes of yours a breath of fresh air. The creators of this day also profess that No Socks Day will reduce your laundry load, and therefore, is healthy for the environment.

It's easy to participate in No Socks Day. Just leave your socks and stocking off, and let your toes enjoy a moment in the sun! Note: While washing your feet prior to participating in No Socks Day is a requirement, painting your toe nails is completely optional. :)

Celebrate Cinco (5/05)

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Olé! Happy Cinco de Mayo! (Spanish for "5th of May") The holiday commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; Mexico's Independence Day is actually September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), which is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

Although today is THE day to celebrate...there are so many great Mexican food choices around town, you should take the week and celebrate.

Nuevo Acapulco (www.nuevoacapulco.com)
Winner of the 2003 Best Margaritas by Citysearch of Cleveland, this local watering hole will be open late tonight to handle the festivities. With specials on drinks, including the Mango Scarlet Orange Margarita, it is sure to be a wild fiesta. Personally, I love the classic Mexican breakfast, Huevos Rancheros! Get there early, happy hour is from 4-7pm.

Villa y Zapata (www.villayzapata.com)
Looking to explore the heart of the city, visit this authentic family-owned eatery. The margaritas are bright green and the salsa is hot! Scene Magazine has voted them Best Chiles Rellenos in town, so go and try. There might be a line, but the parking lot is always buzzing with folks, great for people watching!

Luchitas (www.luchita.com)
In 1981, Luchita Galindo decided to follow her dream of opening her own business. After years of hard work and perseverance, she and her son Jorge Galindo opened the doors to a small Mexican restaurant on the Westside of Cleveland; their restaurant is Luchita’s Mexican Restaurant. Now with multiple locations around Northeast Ohio, this Mexican favorite will be hopping all week.

El Tango Taqueria
Hungry people, looking to celebrate take note- the food here is tasty, affordable and authentic. Large flour-tortilla burritos are stuffed with choice of meat, chicken, pork, fish or veggies. There's delicious tamale pie con pollo, a daily soup and specials. The wholesome chicken-lime-veggie soup is a meal in itself. BYOB! Located next door to Lakewood High School Field on Madison Ave.

Paladar Kitchen (www.paladarlatinkitchen.com)
The happy hour is offered from 4-7pm in the bar area. Choose from $5 Mojitos & Margaritas, $3 Latin Beer Specials and happy hour portions for under $5. Viva Paladar!

Chipoltle (www.chipotle.com)
For those of us on the run, pull up to your local Chipotle for chips, guac and a corona, or two!

If you have a favorite that I have missed, please feel free to post and spread the word.

Happy May Day (5/01)

Thursday May 1st, 2008

May Day is celebrated in many places around the world. The traditions and stories surrounding May Day vary from place to place. There is, however, one thing that is similar in most celebrations - the use of Flowers!

One of the most popularly known May Day traditions is to hang a basket full of spring flowers and/or other small gifts on a neighbor's doorknob. The trick is you don't want the neighbor to see you BUT, if you get caught you are supposed to get a kiss. :)

Although this image isn't of flowers or springtime charm, it reminded me of May first and the excitement of summerTIME. Hope you have a happy May Day and enjoy this funky photo.

Monday, March 17th, 2007

Happy St. Patrick's Day Cleveland! Top 'O the morning to ya!

I used to absolutely love it when McDonald's brought out their Shamrock Shakes around St. Patrick's Day. The past couple of years I haven't been able to either find the special treat or want the extra calories...so I was thrilled when I found this copycat recipe!

Ingredients (makes 2 large glasses0
2 cups vanilla ice cream or soy ice cream
1 1/4 cups 2% low-fat milk or soymilk
1/4 teaspoon mint extract
8 drops green food coloring

Directions
1) Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until smooth.
2) Stop blender to stir with a spoon if necessary to help blend ice cream.
3) Pour into 12-ounce cups and serve each with a straw.
4) Happy St Patrick's Day!

So, if you aren't out "celebrating" with a green beer (or 2), stay in this evening and whip up a pitcher (or 2) of "healthy" Shamrock Shakes. Enjoy.

Happy Fat Tuesday (2/5)

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Mardi Gras was brought to Louisiana by early French settlers. The first record of the holiday being marked in Louisiana is 1699. The starting date of festivities in New Orleans is unknown, but an account from 1743 notes that the custom of carnival balls was already established by that date. In 1833 Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville a rich plantation owner raised money to fund an official Mardi Gras celebration. Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday") is the day before Ash Wednesday, and is also called "Shrove Tuesday" or "Pancake Day". Mardi Gras is the final day of Carnival, though the term is often used incorrectly to describe the days and weeks preceding Fat Tuesday.

Join Brittany Davidson & Friends (a "Blues Folk" band) this Fat Tuesday at Cleveland's own Happy Dog Bar at 5801 Detroit Ave. The band goes on around 9:30 but come early for dinner as they have a full menu. The basket of tater tots ($3) and pierogis ($7) are local favorites!

A Day of Art in Cleveland

Last weekend I was able to spend the day with two of my closest friends while exploring our own fair city.

The morning began with breakfast at the triangle cafe (previously, la oui oui cafe) in Ohio city. After an egg white omelet with goat cheese and tomatoes and a skim cafe au lait, we were pleasantly full and ready to start our day of holiday shopping.

First stop Bizarre Bazaar. Walking down Huron Ave we fought the cold winds as we approached the buzz and warmth of the creativity inside the artistic festival of fun. Each booth had something whimsical and clever to offer, each artist on hand to review their work. After hours of scouring the show we scored many unique finds. From a silver razor blade necklace to hand letter pressed holiday cards, from sassy illustrated mouse pads to unique "Christmas-morning" earrings, there was something for everyone. If you didn't make it this year, don't miss out next year.

After a quick pit stop at Starbucks for a few gingerbread lattes we headed over to University Circle. Second stop, the Cleveland Institute of Art Student Show and Holiday Sale. To be honest the sale was a bit underwhelming - and that's being nice. It is always such a delight to enter the halls of an educational institution to experience "flyer-ed" walls looking for roommates or band members, but in general, the student art at the show was more like a series of mistakes and '"do-overs" (Think lots of very thick pottery pieces). In giving the school and students the benefit of the doubt we guessed that perhaps many of the student artists were participating at the Bizarre Bazaar. We hope that was the case.

From the two more quirky younger art sales we decided to cap off our day with a final stop at the Art Craft Building on Superior and East 30th. The space itself houses many working artists studios but this weekend on the third floor more than 40 artists shared with Cleveland some awe inspiring talent and impeccable craft. From exquisite glass blown wine glasses to completely museum-quality-like jewelry. If only I could devote my entire paycheck to art, it could have been fun. Although we didn't buy much there we ran into a few friends, indulged in fresh popcorn and were inspired to keep saving our pennies for that day when we were going to walk away with a large painting of sorts.

The day was about celebrating Cleveland artists while spending time with friends and picking up a few holiday treats along the way...what could be better?
