The "FEAST" (8/13-16)

Thursday, August 13th through Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Cleveland's Feast of the Assumption, is held each year in mid-August in the city's Little Italy neighborhood, it's a four-day street fair that celebrates the Catholic Day of Assumption (August 15), when the Virgin Mary died and assumed her place beside Jesus. Although the hill is a complete "MOB" scene, the Feast is a fun-filled Italian street party with rides, food (Gnocchi & Cannolis), live music and the traditional parade.

The four-day Feast of the Assumption is a wonderful mix of religion and secular fun. The entire length of Mayfield Road, between Euclid Ave and Cleveland Heights is closed off to traffic. In their place are carnival rides, delicious Italian-themed food vendors, arts & crafts booths, and live music stages, playing everything from rock to "It's Amore." In addition, there are fireworks at night and a parade on August 15. The event draws over 100,000 visitors each year. Admission is free.

Wonderful Waterloo (6/27)

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Some wise person recently tipped me on to the "BEST" arts festival in Cleveland...and I MUST see what the excitement is all about! (I am so there.)

Cleveland’s fastest-growing grassroots, family-friendly arts festival is back and better than ever, with more exhibits, installations performances and activities. More than 5,000 people are expected to spend the day on Waterloo, seeing and making art, catching live performances, shopping an array of vendors and noshing on local eats, as well as visiting all the one-of-a-kind businesses that make this burgeoning district unique.

PLUS, while you're visiting...The Beachland Ballroom is hosting a "Rock n' Roll Flea Market," wonder what treasures we can find?

Supper @ Gatherings Kitchen

On any given Friday you can find the windows of 17004 Madison Avenue aglow. The aromas of a busy gourmet restaurant are rolling out into the street. The low rumble of excitement and chatter fills the air...it’s time for “Supper.”

As a fellow Lakewood-ite, I would like to introduce and welcome the new business Gatherings Kitchen to the ‘hood. The brain child of Chefs Ruth and Doug, Gatherings Kitchen is a boutique catering business by day, but when Friday nights roll in, let the cooking fun begin!

Ever wanted to learn how to dismantle an artichoke, make hand-rolled gnocchi or “french” a lamb? This is the place to go. Each Friday a lucky twelve “chefs” meet at the kitchen for a culinary exploration. Nothing too difficult, just recreational cooking at its best. After a solid two hours in the kitchen, students move into the storefront dining room (which features a custom-made farmhouse style table and a vintage crystal chandelier) where they are served the fruits of their labor, course by course, by Chefs Ruth & Doug.

Supper is BYOB, so bring some spirits to share with your fellow foodies. You are guaranteed to walk away with a few knife tricks in your pocket, a full belly and a handful of new Cleveland friends.

The new June menu has arrived at Gatherings Kitchen (South American Cuisine.) Spaces are filling up fast, so grab your friends and sign up together. $50 per person. 6:30-10:00pm-ish!

It's Blossom Time (5/21-25)

Thursday May 21st - Monday, May 25th, 2009

Looks like this weekend is going to be SPECTACULAR! I am so excited because I am going to experience Blossom Festival in Chagrin Falls for the very first time! Hot air balloon races, pie eating contests, music, carnival rides and a race (Sunday @ 9am), my kinda weekend!

Join the residents of the Chagrin Falls as they welcome the arrival of warmer weather to the Falls. With flowers and trees in full bloom, the Chagrin Falls area is transformed from a winter wonderland into a warm, peaceful, enchanting place to spend your lazy summer evenings. After shopping, eating, rides, and games at the festival, don't forget to spend some quality time enjoying the natural beauty of the area homes, gardens, parks, and the Chagrin River.

I think the best part of the weekend (besides the cotton candy) will be all the hot air balloons scattered over the village sky. There is something about a hot air balloon that hypnotizes me. Perhaps it’s the purring sound of the rush of flames being thrown into the sky, or the quiet calmness that hovers over the crowd as they watch in astonishment. Anyone want to get up early and meet me out there to watch the balloons take off Sunday morning, 6:00am, I will bring the coffee?

For those of you who think they are as cool as I do, check out these few fun facts....
• the most popular balloon is as tall as a 7-story building
• the average balloon costs $20,000 to $40,000
• ideal times to fly are just after sunrise and just before sunset
• a hot air balloon can land in water
• balloons can stay up for 1-2 hours depending on conditions and occupants
• inflating a balloon takes about 15 minutes
• invented back in 1783 in Paris, France (GO PARIS!)

Celebrate Darwin (2/12-15)

Thursday, February 12th through Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Join the staff of the Cleveland Botanical Gardens as they invite you to Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birthday and the 150th anniversary of The Origin of Species.

An English naturalist Darwin realised and demonstrated that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors through the process he called "natural selection." The fact that evolution occurs became accepted by the scientific community and much of the general public in his lifetime, while his theory of natural selection came to be widely seen as the primary explanation of the process of evolution in the 1930s, and now forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory. In modified form, Darwin’s scientific discovery remains the foundation of biology, as it provides a unifying logical explanation for the diversity of life

A special display of rare books and hands-on activities will be part of the Museums celebration. Free with Garden Admission, no registration required. 1-3pm

Dia de Los muertos (11/1)

Saturday November 1st, 2008

Celebrate Cleveland's fourth annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, coordinated by Artistas Latinos Unidos (United Latino Artists) and spearheaded by artist Hector Castellanos.

The first day of the celebration includes a procession that's symbolic of spirits traveling home for the celebration. At 2:15 p.m., it heads west on Detroit Avenue to La Sagrada Familia Church, where parishioner Leticia Raigoza will have prepared an outdoor altar. The focus of the celebration is the altar dedicated to the deceased. There will be nine in the La Sa´grada Familia Church and parish hall designed by a flock of Cleveland artists, including Nina Hurin and Merlida Mercado.

Since no celebration is complete without food, Raoul and Roberto Rodriguez will be selling pan de muerto, decorated with little bones or skeletons made from dough, come hungry!

Festivities begin at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (West 70th St. & Detroit Ave.)

Some of the celebration highlights are as follows
2:15 pm.: Procession departs for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church
3:30 pm : Joya de Mexico mariachi band.
5:15 pm : Day of the Dead history talk by Hector Castellanos.
6:45 pm : Mexclatina music group.

If it's a nice day, ride your bike along the procession route. Bring the entire family and swing by at Mi Pueblo Taqueria (12207 Lorain Ave) for dinner after. Yumm!

Art Night (10/28)

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

I read about this event last week and for some reason can't get it out of my head..a MUST share.

Ever taken an art class, ever wanted too? Enjoy the smell of new crayons, colored pencils and charcoal? Like to figure draw? Ever wanted to try? Like Halloween costumes, models and as an added bonus...a drink or two? Well have I got the perfect evening out for you!

Join CIA grads Jason Tilk and Aaron Erb as they present "sketch club for art monkeys" at Beachland Ballroom this Tuesday night. You don't have to be an art fan, just willing to have fun and try something different. The evening will consist of one or two models, a DJ/host and three rounds of poses. (A warm up round of 1 & 2 minute poses, a break, some drinks, some 5 & 10 minute poses, a break, some more drinks, and a few longer poses)

There are a few rules (but nothing like art school rules).
* Dry mediums only, as in ink, markers, crayons, pencils, graphite, pastels, etc. I bought watercolor pencils that I am excited to use!
* Be respectful. That means no pawing at the models and no asking them out.
* No photography at the events.
* 21 and up. This is event is held in a bar.
* Most of all, have fun.

I hope everyone can grab a friend or two and make it out to Beachland. If you need art supplies, I will bring plenty to share!

Bristol Palin’s Baby Shower? (10/19)

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

From BUST Magazine | This is a pretty hilarious and bright idea. Bristol, daughter of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, is as you probably already know getting married to the father of her unborn son. What better way to celebrate the miracle of life (and possibly the loss of choice) than with a baby shower? Swing state Cleveland, OH is where this event is taking place, THIS SUNDAY head over to the Prosperity Social Club in Tremont at 3:30pm to make it for all the festivities. This event is not just a big joke mind you, instead of bringing gifts, bring your checkbook and all donations will be given to Planned Parenthood of Alaska in Sarah Palin’s NAME!

The party will also involve discussions regarding the status of the Ohio Prevention First Act as well as learn how to take action on the legislation. This act ‘will reduce unintended pregnancies through: realistic sexuality education and teen pregnancy prevention programs, funding for family planning programs, guaranteed access to birth control prescriptions, contraceptive equity, and emergency contraception access and education.’ Sounds like a fun event for a great cause for women’s rights, which is a great combination regardless of the Palin’s attempts at taking them away…

There will also be ‘Choice Cupcakes’, a performance by Lounge Kitty (an AWESOME cabaret act) and Rachel Catherine from Cupcake + Cuddlebunny, who will be on hand selling original ‘Bad Buttons’ from New York artist, Kate Black.

Thanks for the heads up “Karl & William!” sounds like a fun afternoon...pre-bar to the Browns game perhaps? :)

If you need any more info, feel free to email the events organizer, Maria Miranda at mariammiranda@sbcglobal.net.
